SML Joins BioMedCentral (BMC)

Saab Medical Library is now a Supporter Member of BioMedCentral (BMC), a publisher of 208 peer-reviewed open access journals.

As a result, any AUB Faculty who wants to publish an article in any of the BMC Journals will be granted a 15% discount on the Article Processing Charges for any primary research that is accepted for publication.

OPEN ACCESS is a topic that has been widely discussed in the last 10 years. It simply refers to electronic resources that are openly available to all users without any charge. However, the author of the publication usually pays a charge (ranges from $1000 to $3000) for publishing in a peer-reviewed open access journal.

This model benefits the authors and the readers as well: the availability for free gives the publication a much larger audience and hence usually results in a greater impact, and the readers benefit from finding the full-text of the article for free and having the article easily accessed.

SML also encourages local medical/scientific journal publishers to be published as open access. This with time might result in higher impact for both the journal and its authors.

Most Highly Cited AUB Papers

SML Reference Librarian did a search on April 9, 2010 (click here to see the search strategy) on Web of Science (WoS) & Scopus for the papers written by an AUB author and indexed in these two databases. Then, the search results were sorted by the number of citations each publication got, and the highest 16 documents were selected.

An identical search was repeated for the last ten years (2000 – 2010) and the highest 16 cited AUB papers were selected. Click below to see the most highly cited AUB papers.*

Treasures of Saab Medical Library Found!

What better way to inform the AUB community about the treasures of the Saab Medical Library (SML) other than by having an open day? And that's exactly what the staff of SML did on Tuesday October 20, 2009 from 12:00 to 6:00 pm. The staff set up in the lobby of the SML with tables stacked with delicious snacks and gifts such as two Samsung Digital Cameras, six art books, two MP3 players, five mugs, and five calculators. But of course these gifts were not won without any effort; the students that attended the event were challenged with medical information retrieval questions and about the SML library and its resources. If the students were able to correctly answer the questions, their names were placed in the draw for one of the many prizes.

So what are the SML treasures? Basically it's a three-in-one treasure of Quality Resources (such as a wide variety of e-journals and e-books, a user friendly homepage, remote access and access to the best medical and health databases available), Professional Help (from an excellent team that answers information queries, helps with literature searches, accessing hard to find articles, citation management and the Lebanese Corner, gives consultation on publishing, and offers live classes and web-based tutorials) and finally the Physical Facility itself (which will soon undergo renovation).

According to Aida Farha, the Information Specialist and Hilda Nassar, the Medical Librarian, "The event was a success because it attracted both professors, physicians and students, and they really enjoyed answering the questions and learning more about SML."
At 5:30 pm a draw took place to select the winners of the prizes, and they were: Amrou Hajjar, Samer El Dika, Sarah Assaf, Ghassan Afram, Georges Fidawi, Yumna Maalouf, Marwan Atallah, Cleo Youssef Massad, Fadi Maalouf, Solandia Saab, Nemr Muallem, Salah Zeindine, Elie Harmouche, Zeinab Saleh, Sarah Karam, Marwan Bakhach, Edward El Asmar, Mohamad Bashir Abiad, Racha Abou Chahine and last but not least, Lina Jbara. Congratulations to all! The gifts were graciously donated by Levant Distributors, Elsevier, Wiley-Blackwell, and the event was supported by the Medical Dean's Office.

Appreciation for SML

On Wednesday July 15, 2009, the Student Representative Committee of the Faculty of Medicine (SRC-FM) held a ceremony where Ms. Hilda Nassar, the medical librarian, received an award from AUB medical students as a token of appreciation. In addition, a number of FM faculty members received similar awards.

Ms. Nassar commented that she was honored to receive the award and considers it to be an appreciation for all SML team.

This information is written in an easy to understand medical language so you do not need to be a health-care professional to understand it.

How to Format Google Scholar Results

Register at RefWorks.
Click "Scholar Preferences" from Google Scholar page.
Go down to "Bibliography Manager" and select "Show links to import citations into" select "RefWorks".
Save Preferences.
Search Google Scholar, select citation of interest, click on its "Import into RefWorks".
Log into RefWorks, click on "Bibliography" and follow the usual steps for managing bibliographies.
If you have any difficulties, ask the Librarian, or call 5911.

Coffee @SML

As of December 1, 2008, SML will allow users to drink their coffee inside Saab Medcial Library, provided they use tightly covered cups!
SML hopes that users will maintain cleanliness, otherwise the library will ban drinking coffee @SML.
